Shrine of the Holy Rosary of the Virgin Incoronata
Shrine of the Holy Rosary of the Virgin Incoronata
Here stood the ancient parish church of Monchiero which, according to evidence dating to 1325, was first dedicated to St. John the Baptist and then to St. Colombano. The remains of the church, which was demolished in 1739, provided the foundation for the new parish and sanctuary, inaugurated in 1773.
In the early nineteenth century emerged the painter-sculptor Giovanni Vassallo di La Morra (bust of Don Fassini, chamber of the new organ). In 1849, the church was enlarged with an extension, two bell towers with façades and a portico in front, designed by architect Alba Giorgio Busca. In 1878 Rodolfo Morgari completed the two paintings depicting the Blessed Sebastiano Valfrè.
Since 1950, the year the new parish church in the lower part of town was consecrated, the sacred edifice retains its status only as a sanctuary dedicated to the Crowned Virgin, or the Rosary.
